Five key messages on gliders and their scientific use

The five key messages on gliders and their scientific use are an outreach contribution within the context of the EU-project GROOM. C. Scheurle, H. Claustre, F. D’Ortenzio, P. Testor and L. Mortier have gathered them.

Gliders are autonomous and used to observe the ocean interior

Gliders are undersea robots equipped with miniaturized sensors. They travel silently in the water column without propeller. These specific instruments allow a remote acquisition of (real-time) data in the ocean interior in a comparatively cost-effective way. The observations they collect concern various oceanographic properties. Precise information on such properties is particularly useful in scientifically based studies in the context of a changing environment.

Gliders ideally explore coastal areas and regional seas

Several glider characteristics turn this type of undersea robots into an ideal device for exploring coastal areas and regional seas. Amongst others (e.g. data acquisition in high temporal and spatial resolution), its trajectory can reach hundreds to a few thousand kilometers. Equipped with batteries, it can so be operated between surface and 1000-1500 meters ocean depth for weeks before recovery. During this time, a two-way communication is possible via satellite when the glider surfaces.

Gliders contribute to research and monitoring activities

Thanks to its capacity to implement a multitude of miniaturized sensors (physical, biogeochemical, optical as well as acoustic sensors), a glider can largely contribute within the context of interdisciplinary research. Continuous ocean measurements on high spatial and temporal resolution together with their availability in near real-time also allow major advancements in operational monitoring.

Gliders as part of an integrated Ocean Observation System

Due to the specific scientific missions gliders can undertake, they are able to achieve synergies with other observing systems. By providing in-situ measurements they complement observations provided by profiling floats, moorings and/or the ones carried out on research vessels. The integration of glider data in the framework of existing observing systems also may complement analysis based on satellite data as well as foster ocean modeling.

Gliders to address societal issues such as coastal management

Their implementation in scientific orientated missions helps i.a. to provide specific responses to key questions in coastal management (e.g. how to face concerns such as oil spills or how to assess ecosystems in the context of marine protected areas). Moreover their data are highly valuable to analyze and forecast ocean, weather and climate. The technological development and the possibilities gliders offer in so divers fields may also stimulate employment as well as knowledge transfer.
